Interpretive book design of the short story "The Raven"

Text as a medium for conveying information plays a central role in our culture. However, words, sentences, letters can have multiple meanings. The content of this can only be created by assembling the fragments while reading and cannot be absolutely fixed. The reading process is inidividual, meaning and content can shift.

Fascinated by that I chose to work with the short story "The raven" by the Americon author Russel Hobban to search for ways to visualize this process of creating meaning through reading. I also wanted to find different approaches than the usual reading book.
Along side a lot of other visual experiments this book design resulted as a possible solution to visualize an abstract story in a way that encourages to dive into it: The reader accompanies the protagonist in his search for “the black” and is taken on an abstract journey with a raven.
