Stairway & Nijinski hare

The main purpose of this mini-project was a wish of our boss to sign the contract  for a design project of almost built house in Moscow region.

Design and renderings were done by our team in a very short period of time.
First two variants and whole disign were supervised by Architectural Buro Kado (Ekaterina Kolesova) and decorator Larisa Krasinskaya..

The customer is a big fan of the works of the american architect Jim Olson and sculptures by Barry Flanagan, so he asked  to make a very pure design with artworks and sculptures.

He recommended us to solve the main problem in the current layout of the house - entrance area with a grand staircase and a view of the river valley of Istra.

This staircase is made of concrete, so it  not only obscures the view, but also  presses on the viewer because of the ugly upper plane of the stairway.

Therefore, we proposed several options for this space.

First -  "Glass clothing".
Thus, featureless plane of the upper stairway was "divided" in 4 glass planes that are attached to the concrete structure on a small distance.

Second
As on the bottom floor right under the stairs is a winter garden, it was proposed to spread the stairs to open the view on the valley and create an opportunity to admire the plants from the ground floor. We chose metal construction with white granite steps, because this design creates a durable & translucent object that does not distract the viewer from the landscape.
The third option is an experiment.
To vary the angles the funny staircase design was invented. During the ascent to the second floor stairways narrow to a small balcony, and on the contrary during the descent down they disperse, forming a long balcony from which you can admire the view of Istra river as well as a garden on the ground floor.
Also we made a quick sketches of the glass and round stairs to make client understand that these options are not very suitable for this volume of the house.
Eventually, the client chose the first option without demolition of the existing staircase.
Thank you! ;)
