Systemic Racism - A Primary Cause of Present Day

Orenn Fells possesses an extensive educational background and diverse work experience in law, education, and management. As a supporter of the Tallahassee, Florida, My Brother's Keeper Community, Orenn Fells has devoted time to helping Blacks and other minority youths from the inner city and economically challenged communities. Such communities serve as evidence of the economic inequality that results from systemic racism.

There has been a long history in America of Blacks disproportionately facing economic injustices. Compared to White Americans, Black Americans are more than twice as likely to live in poverty and be unemployed.

Additionally, in spite of over 50 years since the Fair Housing Act was passed into law to prohibit housing discrimination based in part on race, color, and nationality, Black home ownership is still comparatively low. Although the act was meant to put a stop to discrimination and reverse housing segregation promoted by unjust government practices, today’s data shows that people of color are still more likely to live in areas that have limited access to resources.

Enduring inequalities rooted in systemic racism have been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The APM Research Lab reports that people of color have higher COVID-19 mortality rates. This is partially due to many being employed in low-paying essential jobs associated with greater health risks.
