Common Types of Freshwater Fish Bait and Lures

Currently consulting with businesses in Silicon Valley, California, Peter Eidelman is an experienced business advisor. When not at work, Peter Eidelman spends time collecting coins and freshwater fishing. When fishing, using the proper bait or lure can attract specific fish, increasing one's success.

One type of bait is live bait. It is often easy to obtain at bait stores and includes minnows, worms, and shrimp. While they can be used either dead or alive, minnows are often the most effective form of live bait for many kinds of fish. Worms are often used in streams and rivers for trout fishing. Shrimp tend to mostly be used as saltwater bait. Live bait is often much cheaper than lures, especially for those that source their own live bait.

Lures, on the other hand, are designed to resemble insects or fish and can be made of plastic, silicone, rubber, or other materials. While they are considered more suitable for experts, spinners are particularly useful for freshwater fish, but they often attract more aggressive species such as pike and bass. Another type of lure is swim bait which resembles minnow swimming in the water. They work best in motion, which can be tricky for beginners. In addition, because lures rarely catch the fish with the entire hook, they are preferred for catch and release fishing.
