Get Out the Vote 2020

Background

Get Out the Vote is a campaign designed to raise awareness of our responsibility in shaping our country's future with each election.

While there have been an increasing number of people in the United States voicing out their opinions and beliefs, the percentage of Americans turning out to vote on Election Day doesn't seem to reflect the amount of activism present in our social media.

With that in mind, I've chosen to create a variety of posters and other miscellaneous items to help publicize the need for change.
Concept

My work takes inspiration from the minimalist Swiss designs made popular during the earlier half of the 20th century. Their grid system provides legibility, clarity, and purpose through its geometry and design.

All of the items are unified by a simple, yet strong color scheme designed to attract attention, provide information, and incite action.
Typeface

Although Helvetica proves excellent as a display font, it can appear too compact for the densely packed text often found in government-published documents.

Instead, I opted for Inter, for its softer curves and generous kerning. The difference might be small when glancing at titles and headers, but it is noticeable when reading body text.
Color

Red, white, and blue are the most popular colors used on Election Day; a shade of gold is used for the accent color.
Words and Phrases

Several other sayings were used in addition to the main slogan, “Get Out the Vote.” Color schemes were switched around to create multiple variations.
Poster Design

The four poster designs below serve as the framework for the rest of the project.
A4-sized Variants

Four additional designs were created for A4-sized prints. The previous four posters could also be scaled down provided the type is resized for legibility.
Documents and Forms

I made small alterations to the “Quick Guide: California Voter Registration/Pre-Registration Application” form on the California Secretary of State website (shown below, left) to reduce text density and eye fatigue in several ways: increasing white space between sections, replacing the default font with Inter Bold and Inter Medium, and color-coding headers and subheads to differentiate them from body text.

A Thank You card for registered voters and a voter checklist were also made for the campaign set.
Memorabilia

Shown below are miscellaneous designs for pins to be produced and/or distributed during the campaign.
Materials and Packaging

The redesign process encompasses documents, materials, and packaging used for voter outreach and information. Simple blue and gold color schemes were used for standard envelopes, with alternating stripes on the front; two sets of stamps, each with an alternate color variation, were created for Get Out the Vote.

Several washi tape designs (below) and a small sticker label for cardboard tubes were made as well.
Thank you!
