Typography Movie Poster

Objectives:
You will be creating a typographic movie poster. Based on our visit from John Metcalf and the work he shared, both his own and other iconic examples, you will design a poster inspired by something you've watched while at home on quarantine. The goal is to convey an idea of what the movie is about and to invoke interest in the viewer by using typography as the primary design aesthetic. You may use illustration, photography, or photo manipulation to add to your design, but type must be the focus of your poster design.
This project turned out to be challenging for me as I have not had much experience with typographic designs. From the start, I felt as if there was a large wall place in front of every artistic and creative part of my mind. The blank page seemed daunting as my brain scrambled around for inspiration on Pinterest. I began drawing out ideas, but when looking on Pinterest further, I found many of them to be cliche and basic. Most of my artwork is inspired by my personal perspectives and experiences in life. Although I do enjoy artwork just for enjoyment, usually I would rather have a purpose behind the art piece whether it displays something about my beliefs or society around me. So, I chose the documentary The Social Dilemma that was recently released on Netflix because the movie gave insight into the reality of social media today and how it affects us. The ideas for this movie came slowly... like painfully slow. I originally wanted to do a more vintage and drawing looking poster, but realizing that wouldn't work I moved onto photoshop and played around with different ways to display the movie title.

Below are images of different ideas I had throughout my process on photoshop.
After sketching out my ideas, and getting advice and input from peers, I finally had come up with a place to at least start with this project. I began collecting a folder of different computerized images.
Originally, I was going to do only one person, but I wanted my design to be the good type of busy while capturing how the media can place walls between people. We can be right beside another person without ever realizing it because we are so focussed on the images on our screens.
Seen above, are many layers with different layer masks and blending affects. This process took hours as I created different affects, rearranged multiple layers, as well as adding and removing several images throughout.
These are two images of my final typography designs that I was deciding between. Finally, I decided on the 2nd one which is the one that I hand drew the letters through the app Procreate by downloading an image of a font, placing it as the background image, and then tracing it on a separate layer.

My Final Design:
Small Details You Might have Missed:
In the top and bottom left hand corners I placed two EKG images showing the rate of a heart. There is one near the chest of the person as well on the world map. This was to symbolize how society lives off of technology as if it is our life line.

City lights create the majority of the background as it represents society trapped behind the bars of this "social dilemma."
