Objective: Explore positive/negative shapes and figure/ground meaning in a composition and become familiar with the visual characteristics that achieve a figure/ground relationship. The goal was to first create a unit figure of 50% black and 50% white. This space was derived from a tool through rotation, reflection, and translation. I created a black and white composition which demonstrates the visual effect of alternating figure/ground. My inspiration or reason for why I chose this hammer is because I wanted to choose a simple tool/shape and turn that into a complex and intricate pattern. Also, another reason being I am not too great with the pen tool in Adobe illustrator so I wanted to pick something simple enough that I could work with.
