The Raven Chapbook

The Raven Chapbook
The goal of this project was to research and design an advertisement for Smoothie King's Kids Blend Smoothies. The first part of this project introduced creative briefs and research gathering. We started off with researching the company: who are the compA chapbook was an old piece of literature that was usually compiled of various poems, satire, or even information. Our goal for this project was to create one of these for the poem, The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. A chapbook would usually be 40 plus pages and have more than one item in it, but not all the time. I started by researching Chapbooks and then sketchingetitors, what target audience were we aiming for, what tone did we want to use, etc.
I discovered that the high end chapbooks also had art stamped onto the page crudely cut wood blocks. I decided to mimic this with a medium called indie ink. As you will see I made a few different illustrations for the final product. The next phase however, was all about creating what I wanted it to look like. I focused on fitting typefaces, borders, page styles, and placement of different elements.
After going through different typefaces, I found an easily legible typeface called Acuta. It worked wonderfully and was much easier to read than the typefaces used in my comps. I created my illustrations and scanned them in and arranged my final copy for the chapbook. I made the paper color be a more tan color to fit the feel of The Raven poem. The accompanying illustrations are purposefully rough to stimulate the crude wooden block cut outs used in the older chapbooks.
