A Broader Sense of Belonging is a small-run artist publication. Approaching the book as an art object in its own right, I worked with Toronto-based artist Fehn Foss to produce a booklet that explores, re-works, and builds upon a previous artwork titled Build Up Break Down. In this video performance, the artist uses her body to build and unbuild a barrier, through repetitive actions. She practices constructing something by hand, making something tall and then knocking it down, replacing the stones to where they were found.
The booklet features white ink on vellum covers as well as on vellum inserts. Printed on the inserts are sections of a poem written to accompany the performance. The sections are stacked and staggered so that when each insert is placed on top of each other, they are still legible (though increasingly obscured by layers).
