Titanic Public Art: The Masts

Eight well-known Belfast-made ships are represented by spectacular sculptured masts that line the east side of Donegall Place.

Titanic, her sister ships Olympic and Brittanic and Nomadic are among eight famous Belfast made ships represented by spectacular sculptured masts that line the east side of Donegall Place in the heart of Belfast. Each mast carries a sail which celebrates Belfast's maritime heritage.
" These decorative lighting masts, with their distinctive maritime branding, create something unique in the streetscape of Belfast city centre and I hope in time they will become instantly recognisable as part of Donegall Place, the city centre’s main shopping thoroughfare."

Nelson McCausland
Social Development Minister
I was responsible for research and digital painting of the eight flags, as well as sizing and preparing artwork for print while liaising with BlackSheep, the mast manufacturer to find an appropriate fixing solution that is supportive and stands up to the elements. The masts are 10m tall. The flags are double-sided lined mesh with metal eyelet fixing and tension system.

In November 2012 the Belfast Streets Ahead project, the public realm overhaul of central Belfast, won significant plaudits, including The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Grand Final Award. It was also Highly Commended in the Landscape Institute’s 2012 Awards.
