02 | Just Not | Editorial design

Project Summary:

The following editorial design project focuses on copywriting as well as the use of illustration or photography in an interesting manner. We were required to interview a person, over the age of 30, with an interesting story to tell. We were then required to develop a concept and parts of their story  that would be focused on.

Project Specifications and Deliverables:

The project deliverables include a minimum of four A3 presentation boards of mocked up renders of a dust jacket, cover, end paper, title page, imprint page, contents page, chapter titles pages, and text spreads.

We were also required to submit a PDF file consisting of a dust jacket, cover (front, spine and back), endpapers, title page,  imprint page, contents page/s  (single page or as multiple pages), one completed chapter with a minimum 4 text spreads, chapter titles  (minimum of three chapter title pages in spread format) and a minimum of one additional text spread for each of the remaining three chapter titles (mock copy can be used for these but the introduction paragraph should clarify the narrative of the chapter). Lastly, an MS Word document containing all of the written copy for this project.

Project Rationale:

‘Just Not’ focuses on the life of René Du Toit Horn. The book plays on all the things that she doesn’t want to be known as, in order to tell the story of René: A free spirited woman, who has had her fair share of tragedies, traumas, troubles and failures. This however isn’t to focus on her flaws, but rather to highlight the charm in them, and the idea that success can be made from your failures.

As mentioned, the book unravels her story based on titles that she would rather not be known for, such as ‘Jan’s wife’, ‘Dave’s daughter or ‘Leslie’s lackey’. It uses the metaphor of shoes, something that René loves collecting to the point of having had 120 pair at one point in her life. This metaphor is used to describe her role, and even her relationship, or perception of the role.
