COMM398D - Paws For All

Backgrounder
This assignment entails creating a fictitious non-profit organization, and then designing a backgrounder describing your organization.

Part One
First, think about what kind of activities your fictitious organization engages in. It can be a medical cause, for example: breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, HIV/AIDS. Or a civil-society organization, such as: homeless shelter, animal welfare, youth center, senior center. Or, perhaps, an arts organization: ballet, theatre, opera, or museum. I am open to any and all ideas. Choose something you will want to work with for the rest of the semester.

With this in mind, tell me the name of your group and explain what you imagine it would do. What kinds of activities would it engage in? Whom/what does it support? Feel free to research other non-profits of a similar type. Write 150 words in a Microsoft Word document explaining your non-profit to me.

Part Two
This assignment is designed for you to use all that you have learned about InDesign and design principles so far this semester. You will be creating a company-backgrounder.

• Create an 8.5 x 11 inch document
• The backgrounder should include at least one picture to add visual interest to the design.
• Create a free profile with Masterfile.com and use a picture that suits your organization
• The rest of the requirements for the activity are fairly loose, but you must do the following:
• Alter the shape of the image frame AND/OR add an effect to the image
• Create a company name and display it on the sheet
• Create a tagline or subhead for the company
• Use the insert placeholder text function and format the text so it looks professional.
• Create interesting subheadings that divide up your text.
• Create some kind of graphic element. The element does not have to be prominent. Think in the abstract.
• Use the text-wrap function either around the picture, a graphic element, or the organization name.
• Use the eye-drop tool to get one or two colors from the picture and use those colors in the text
• Make up contact information and display it on the sheet.

My Company: Paws For All
Paws For All is a civil-society organization that helps support and take in rescue animals. We search around the DMV area for unwanted, abandoned, abused, or stray pets. We dedicate our time to find suitable safe homes for them. While they are at our location, we give the animals the proper love and care they need, such as grooming, exercising, vaccinations, and starting them on a healthy balanced meal with protein and vitamins. Our rescue groups are created by and run by volunteers with a few medical vets on location for emergency services or check-ups. We believe no animal should suffer alone and especially not locked up in a cramped kennel amongst other loud and anxious animals in a shelter. We want to make an impact on the animal's life by providing the attention, support, and comfort they deserve. After our furry friends are doing sufficient, we find a reliable and safe home for them to live within.
Logo Activity
In this part of the assignment, you will create a logo for your nonprofit organization.
Working in Illustrator, create your own logo.Your logo needs to include a shape or graphic construction and the name of the organization. Or, there needs to be some alteration of the letter-forms using the "create outlines" function.
Poster Assignment
You will create an event poster using Adobe Illustrator. The poster can be used to promote any event for your organization, and should include a time and place. Examples include a benefit/fundraiser, sporting event, concert, meeting, lecture, dinner, etc. For full credit your poster must include the following:
• 12” x 18”
• One heavily manipulated image in Photoshop, and a second image that requires no manipulation in Photoshop
• Text that is wrapped around an object.
• The event title
• Date, time, and place
• Enough text to let a reader know what the event is about (you must write the body text, do not use placeholder text).

Newsletter
You will create a 4-page newsletter in InDesign. Since the newsletter will have 4 pages, here will be a cover, 2 facing pages, and the back cover.
