A data-driven visualisation of a track

For my next project I wanted to do something music based.

‘Atlas’ is one of the new releases from Bicep on their forthcoming album, ‘Isles’, to be released in Jan.

And I love it.

I was scrolling through the YouTube comments one day and I saw this one which got me thinking.

Can’t say I disagree, but this sparked an interesting idea of whether breaking down the data components of a song into visual elements could actually enhance the emotions you feel from it.

This is my first attempt at creating a track visualisation through the song’s instrumental data which can hopefully harmonise the listening and viewing experience.

I began by scrubbing the track and noting all of the individual elements I could hear, then started to imagine what each of these could ‘look’ like together.

After a lot of trial and error, screen shouting and genuine happy accidents, this is what I landed on.
