The Joy luck Club is a novel by Amy Tan that follows the lives of four Chinese immigrant mothers' their very Americanized daughters living in San Francisco.

Tasked with completely redesigning the exteriors and interiors of the novel, I went for the approach of using the color red, which in Chinese culture represents joy and luck, creating a visual association with the title of the book. In addition, the use of the dragon, a Chinese symbol for bravery and strength, was to pay homage to the mothers and their lives before immigrating to America. Lastly, when looking closely at the book, it was designed to mimic stitching and fabric, as if it was a piece of clothing belonging to a woman to tie into the feminist aspect of the novel.
