The Trout Unlimited Adopt-a-Trout Program

Highlands, North Carolina resident Ernest Montford attended the University of Georgia where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business. After serving as an account executive at Merrill Lynch and then as a manager and VP at E. F. Hutton, Ernest Montford founded his own company, Montford Associates, in 1989. Mr. Montford holds a lifetime membership with Trout Unlimited (TU).

A non-profit organization founded in 1959, TU works nationally to protect and restore fisheries and watersheds in North America’s cold-water bodies. TU operates a range of educational initiatives including the Headwaters program, Deschutes Restoration Outreach Program (DROP), and Adopt-a-Trout program.

Designed to provide students with an education based on having hands-on experience in the field of fisheries science, the Adopt-a-Trout program involves a day trip into the field to tag fish with telemetry tags so that their movement can be tracked throughout the year. By providing students with an opportunity to learn about and contact the fish in the river environment, they gain a deeper understanding of concepts including geography, hydrology, and chemistry. This program is currently offered in Wyoming and Colorado in collaboration with state agencies.
