Idea

New travel experience with a mobile cabin delivered by a cargo drone

Design practice “SFSO” based in San Francisco and Seoul proposes an innovative travel service, using a mobile cabin that can be delivered to an uncharted destination, and returned to the departure point by cargo drones.

Background

The widespread use of social media and increasing number of low-cost airlines, over-tourism attracts too many tourists to specific areas which causes many side effects in the local community.

For example, well-known tourist attractions in local regions become overcrowded with too many tourists from all over the world, not only making local residents uncomfortable, but also destroying the local culture. Moreover, the indiscriminate development of accommodation such as hotel chains and resorts built by huge companies is constantly destroying the local environment. Furthermore, the social distance caused by COVID-19 pandemic is threatening the existence of traditional tourism and hospitality industries.

Due to these problems, a new travel system is required to maintain a sustainable tourism industry. As a result, SF-SO designed a mobile cabin that delivers drone to provide travelers with opportunities to stay in more diverse and unique locations where they have never been. In addition, this service not only gives a fresh experience to the travelers but also protects the local environment and society since the drone brings this cabin back to the city after the guests leave.

Service

The detailed service is as fellow.

Step 1 :
First, A traveler selects the destination where he wants to leave through the map installed in an app before leaving the journey. This reservation service can also be linked with existing travel platforms such as Airbnb which already provided to customers

Step 2 :
Next, the cabin, stored in the nearest droneport to the traveler's designated location, is delivered to the destination by drone. (If the destination is too far from the droneport, they can use an airship to deliver)

Step 3 :
When the traveler arrives at the destination, the cabin is already delivered. So, the traveler can stay in the cabin immediately after completing a simple preparation process, such as unfolding, and leveling the cabin, etc.

Step 4 :
After the traveler finishes staying in this cabin, the drone will bring back the cabin and drop off to the droneport.

Cabin

Housing unit

The cabin is 2.2m(L) x 1.5m(W) x 2.2m(H) cuboid box, and can accommodate 2 adults.
On the top of the unit, there are four hooks to fix it stably to the cargo drone.

The body of the cabin is made of insulated plastic panels, and the whole interior and some parts of the exterior are finished with wood, which allows guests to feel a more comfortable atmosphere. And, the cabin is shipped folded to reduce air resistance and prevent it from damage. When the folded cabin is delivered to a specific destination by drones or airships, the guest can unfold the panels by himself. This assembly process is very simple and intuitive, it just takes 10 minutes to install.

The cabin is equipped with not only residential space but also various residential equipment to provide fresh water, electricity, and heating. Also, leftover food and garbage from the guests are also collected into a tank in this unit, Therefore, since the drone brings this unit back to the city after the guests leave the unit, there is no artificial trace left in the place where the housing unit was.

Meal

The hospitality service encourages guests not to cook in order to reduce food waste and not disturb the wildlife. Instead, meals are served in a similar fashion as the airline’s meal system. The meal is precooked and delivered with the housing unit by the drone. And whenever the guests need it, the meal is heated in the oven built in the housing unit.

Furniture, amenity

The cabin is delivered with some boxes, which contains the items that travelers need, such as furniture, blankets, portable toilets, and a variety of amenities.
