Jeffrey Cobbold: M E T A D S (Music Education Through Autobiographical Digital Storytelling)

American multimedia artist and experimental soundscape musician Jeffrey Cobbold released a 13-track album documenting his journey of fear in this touching biographical piece created during his time in Valencia, Spain.

I had the privilege to work with Jeffrey in coming up with the typography, art direction and design of the album.

For the visual concepts I wanted to include the albums' theological roots, the city of Barcelona and textures of traditional fine art.

The circular artwork was inspired by the circular stain glass found in Palau de la Musica in Barcelona. I started by sketching segmented circles and painting over them with watercolors.

I was able to manipulate the drawing in Photoshop to create a dark stain glass effect, while also drawing focus on the sketch marks underneath.

It was important to show the pencil marks in the final album artwork because the album weaves together many small moments of vulnerability/fear to create a cohesive message, much like sketching out ideas turns in to a final image.
This project was a great exercise in combining my love of fine art with digital art. I really enjoyed starting out with just a pencil and paper and digitally manipulating it to form two final images (the album cover and single cover).
