Chinese Lunar New Year Red Packets:
NGIES Blue Packets 2021—Year of Ox
NGIES Blue Packets 2021—Year of Ox
A word play on the Chinese idiom "Niu zhuan qian kun / 扭转乾坤”, meaning “reverse a bad situation or unfavorable condition to one’s advantage”. I thought it was pretty apt for the situation the world is in right now, with the ongoing Covid pandemic. The phrase then becomes a reminder, and a note of encouragement to the receiver that better times will come soon.
I just could not ideate a perfect ox design even after 3 days, I then decided to keep it simple in the end. When I think about the Year of Ox, the visuals that comes to mind is either an angry Red Bull, or a soothing calming Cow. I decided to go with the latter. Additionally, my mum is born in the Year of Ox, and the gentle image suits her a lot more!
I went with flora patterns to soften the solid bold strokes of the type and illustration, using the contrast to help make the phrase stand out. & as always, we have blue packets instead of red packets—different shades of blue is used to give the packaging more depth.
