A Handful of Petals
Jan 7 2021 — current
A Handful of Petals is a slice-of-life series, with elements of modern fantasy, queerness, and romance. Occasionally, Petals takes on more serious topics, but I always make sure to comfort my audience at the end. The focus is on the relationships the characters have with each other, whilst introducing different aspects of their lives.

I create every part of Petals, including making a font from my own handwriting and developing palettes for each character. Petals has grown artistically and emotionally, and I have enjoyed adding many aspects of my own life into it. I believe in inclusivity and representation, thus the majority of characters are queer, the main character is non-binary, and though the world is fictional, I have taken from my upbringing as a Chinese person in Malaysia.

While I started researching and drawing in late 2018, I only began publishing on webcomics platforms and under the name at the start of 2021. Currently, Petals updates every 2 weeks and has over 8000 subscribers.
A Handful of Petals — Jade
Dec 3 2021 — Mar 17 2022
In December 2021, I created a short story arc (titled Jade) for Petals detailing how the main character ended up together. Jade was an important story for me, not just for backstory purposes, but for embracing aspects of my heritage and culture. From celebrating the winter solstice, to pasar malam night markets, to the symbolism of jade and hanfu, I was very excited to add these Malaysian and Chinese elements into Petals. From Jade onwards, I became more confident adding these touches to the non-ceremonial stories, solidifying the world and letting my audience find out more about Southeast Asian life.

Love Letter
Feb 17 2021 — hiatus
Love Letter is romance story featuring two bisexual boys. I use a lot of flower metaphors in this long-form comic, and the nature of it let me be more experimental with page and panel layouts. I chose to work in halftone greyscale to better understand values contrast and spot blacks in comics. It also let me develop my line work and composition skills.

Love Letter has been on hiatus since July 2021 as I chose to put more of my resources into  as the latter was growing rapidly.

Cover art
Cover art for my webcomics (for the hosting site Tapas)
One thing I've learned about cover art for my webcomics is that they have to be eye-catching in a mass of other series. My first covers were good illustrations on their own, but better for established names and print. I had to rethink my strategy.

For Love Letter, I decided to colour one of my best pages. I chose a palette that was in both in line with the established colour theme (the royal blue of morning glory flowers, a flower that is used throughout the series), and the bisexual pride flag. The type is an edited Hoeffler with the curl on the 'v' mimicked in the 't's, with the curl extending into ligatures.

For A Handful of Petals, I decided as a short-form episodic series, it would be best to establish a handful of different scenes. Thus the panels in the background imply a little comedy and a little fantasy to the kissing scene in the front. All the assets were from published episodes, so readers who clicked in would find it familiar.
