Vogue vandalized. Dubbelganger //The personal issue.

This project was conceived as an artistic statement about the role of beauty ideals, specifically those regarding skin, on society. It is no secret that the photos in fashion magazines such as Vogue are edited and retouched. You'll never see any acne or uneven skintone. Removing these 'flaws' means that they are underrepresented in the media. This conditions the people who look at these magazines think of acne as 'weird' or 'bad'. Acne is often referred to as 'bad skin' or a 'skin problem'.

I have struggled with acne for over 16 years and it has greatly impacted my self-confidence. Looking back, I remember how insecure flicking through fashion magazines made me feel. This project was my way of processing those feelings and finally coming to terms with accepting my skin, flaws and all.

Dubbelganger is a vandalized version of an issue of Vogue. All 150+ pages of the original issue were replicated via scans. The text and layout remain the same, but every single foto has been edited. By photoshopping acne onto the models, I want to show people how normal and common acne is. In addition to this 'graphic graffiti' I also integrated photos of my own body into the magazine, showing all of the places where I get acne.
