Self Portrait Multiples: The American Housewife

For my self-portrait multiples, I wanted to exploit the expectations of the “American Housewife”. My intention was to bring up issues of gender norms and roles, especially of women. There is this overarching presence of patriarchy, especially in America, so I thought it would be interesting to focus on how women are expected to act and behave—clean, cook, maintain a respectable household. I also included some more images that is the side of the “American Housewife” we would not necessarily see, the napping on the couch, the wine drinking (I’m 22 and it is water). The apron reads “Wine A Little Laugh A Lot” which plays on the idea of drinking and being a housewife. I hope people see this self-portrait and it starts a conversation surrounding gender norms and expectations of specifically American Households.

With regards to my photography method, I wish the resolution was higher. I used my iPhone camera, but some images still appeared slightly blurry. This isn’t something I can prevent though so honestly, given my resources, I think the photos came out alright. I have included some of the solo pictures below that were used in the self-portrait multiples. Hope you enjoy my project!
