hierarchy + tschichold

In this project I was to explore hierarchy in typography. To do this I had to design three sets of book covers creating the front, back, and spine. I was limited to white and two other colors. I could also only use type and no additional shapes. Check out my process in my dropmark here.
Design 1: I went for more of a straight forward and clean approach to this design. I chose to have Master Typographer be the focal point.
The decision to have it wrap around the book was to have the book cover be an entire experience.
Design 2: I wanted to bring attention to the large letter forms with this cover. The letters stretch across front, back, and spine to make the whole
cover a full design.
Design 3: (Front Cover) On this design I really wanted to play with the type. Jan Tschichold was a Master Typographer so my thoughts were to bring attention to the type in the front cover.
Zoomed In Shot: An up close look to see how each letter nestles into one another. I wanted the word Typographer to still be legible but eye catching.
Back Cover: The decision to blow up these names was to fill in the white space. I faded them enough so they were still legible but not distracting.
Final Shot Design 3: Front and back together.
