Elderly Rehabilitation Bike

*This project is based on the integrated design course in 2021.

The “elderly rehabilitation bike” is design for the elderly who need daily passive assistance rehabilitation after the acute phase of the disease. Users can use it on a bed or on a chair, minimizing the damage to the knee joints. The rehabilitation bike is integrated into the home environment in a curved shape, breaking the stiff image of the rehabilitation equipment.

Concept

To avoid muscles and joints atrophy, elderly with limited mobility can do rotation and pedal in daily life. The product help users rejuvenate muscles and joints with simple rehabilitation exercises. The design idea is from a recumbent exercise bike because they put the center of gravity on the hips, have minimal loss to knee joints, and are suitable for the elderly. The product can move limbs and train coordination at the same time. Considering that the elderly have inconvenience in mobility, they cannot get up easily because of their thighs and knees' weakness. The rehabilitation site moves to the user's bedside and chairside. The user only needs to sit on the edges of the bed or chair to rehabilitate.

Rehabilitation equipment often has stiff shapes and doesn't match the home environment. A forsty image will deter users, so I want to find out an external apperance that is warm and prodive a sence of home.
