The following book cover project is entirely personal. I have decided to create a special hard cover edition for the book "1984", written by George Orwell.
O projeto de capa de livro a seguir é inteiramente pessoal. Eu decidi criar um edição especial em capa dura para o livro "1984", escrito por George Orwell.
While doing a research on what was already done for this book, I noticed that it is very common to use war-themed objects, or something related to spying, surveillance cameras or Big Brother. In this project, I decided to go further and use a different point of view from the story, which is the one of freedom under a restrainable government (which can be seen on the mockingbird on the back cover, which refers to a specific point in the book).
Enquanto fazia uma pesquisa sobre o que já foi feito para este livro, percebi que é muito comum usar objetos com o tema de guerra, ou algo relacionado a espionagem, câmeras de vigilância ou o Grande Irmão. Neste projeto, eu decidi ir além e usar um ponto de vista da história diferente, que é o da liberdade sob um governo restritivo (o que pode ser visto no tordo na capa traseira, que se refere a ponto específico do livro).
However, the general aesthetic of the piece was entirely inspired on old war posters, including the colors and the typeface.
Contudo, a estética geral da peça foi inteiramente inspirada em antigos cartazes de guerra, incluindo as cores e a face tipográfica.
The Colors | As Cores
First of all, I chose a color palette that would match the general mood of the piece, considering the color psychology. The deep red not just brings the idea of violence, danger and war, but it’s also elegant, mature and refined, which is suitable for a special edition, along with the golden elements, which conveys the idea of something radiant and valuable. Besides that, the gold and the “rays of light” on the cover bring the idea of freedom, relating to the iconography of the sun, which is, as I see it, the ultimate representative of freedom. The “brownish-gray” spread all over the cover is to refer to the idea of something conservative and lifeless.
Primeiramente, escolhi uma paleta de cores que combinaria com o humor geral da peça, considerando a psicologia das cores. O vermelho escuro não apenas traz a ideia de violência, perigo e guerra, mas ele é também elegante, maduro e refinado, o que é adequado para uma edição especial, junto com os elementos dourados, que expressam a ideia de algo radiante e valioso. Além disso, o dourado e os "raios de sol" na capa trazem a ideia de liberdade, relacionando-se com a iconografia do sol, que é, como eu vejo, o último representante de liberdade. O "cinza-marrom" espalhado por toda a capa é para se referir à ideia de algo conservador e sem vida.

The Typeface | A Face Tipográfica
Regarding the typeface, it was carefully chosen based on war posters. For the title and the synopsis on the back, I found Expressway to be very useful, since it is sans serif, which demands attention, but also because it has a military and old look, to match the book’s time and theme. For the author’s name, again based on war posters, I found Permanent Marker, which is a handdrawn typeface to resemble not just a signature, but also an aggressive writing.
Com relação à face tipográfica, a mesma foi cuidadosamente escolhida baseada em cartazes de guerra. Para o título e a sinopse na traseira, eu achei a Expressway muito útil, já que ela é sem serifa, o que requere atenção, mas também porque ela tem uma aparência militar e antiga, para combinar com o tempo e o tema do livro. Para o nome do autor, novamente baseado em cartazes de guerra, eu encontrei a Permanent Marker, que é uma face tipográfica manuscrita que aparenta não apenas uma assinatura, mas também uma escrita agressiva.
The Censorship | A Censura
As a special feature, there is a paper stripe (which can be separated from the book) simulating the Party’s control, as if the Ministry of Truth had read the book and restricted it, due to its contents. It’s a way of bringing the story into the real world, and making the reader, somehow, part of the story.
Como um recurso especial, há uma tira de papel (que pode ser separada do livro) simulando o controle do Partido, como se o Ministério da Verdade tivesse lido o livro e o restringido, devido ao seu conteúdo. É uma maneira de trazer a história para o mundo real, e tornar o leitor, de alguma maneira, parte da história.
It is entirely black, since it’s a strong and oppressive message, with its text in Newspeak (the language for official documents in the story). The front simply says “This book has been censored for your protection” to catch the attention of a passing by reader at the bookstore. The back is the message in Newspeak: “Thinkpol antereaded and considered this book doubleplusungood and thoughtcrimeful. It should be rectified by Minitrue and/or vaporized, and the comrade who reads it may become an unperson”, meaning “The thought police has read and considered this book to be extremely noxious and inducing of crime thinking. It should be rewritten/corrected by the Ministry of Truth and/or destroyed, and the comrade who reads it may be eliminated from Earth.” Also, the white areas have a micro-printing watermark, with the word “minitrue” repeated all over the image.
Ela é inteiramente preta, já que é uma mensagem forte e opressiva, com seu texto em Novilíngua (a língua para documentos oficiais na história). A parte frontal simplesmente diz, em inglês, "Este livro foi censurado para sua proteção" para prender a atenção de um leitor que estiver passando pela livraria. Na traseira há a mensagem em Novilíngua (em inglês): "Thinkpol antereaded and considered this book doubleplusungood and thoughtcrimeful. It should be rectified by Minitrue and/or vaporized, and the comrade who reads it may become an unperson", significando "A polícia do pensamento leu e considerou este livro extremamente nocivo e indutor de pensamento-crime. Ele deve ser reescrito/corrigido pelo Ministério da Verdade e/ou destruído, e o camarada que o ler poderá ser eliminado da Terra". Além disso, as áreas brancas têm uma microimpressão em marca-d'água, com a palavra "minitrue" repetida por toda a imagem.
The Ministry of Truth Logo | O Logo do Ministério da Verdade
The logo of the Ministry of Truth, which appears on the inside of the stripe, was carefully built to resemble an official seal, with adequate symbols and security features, to match the Party's ideology. It is also blue, since the Party wants to assure an image of trust.
O logo do Ministério da Verdade, que aparece no interior da tira, foi cuidadosamente construído para se assemelhar a um símbolo oficial, com símbolos adequados e características de segurança, para combinar com a ideologia do Partido. Ele é também azul, já que o Partido que assegurar uma imagem de confiança.
On the outside circle of the logo, we see a Guilloché pattern, not just to refer to the old ornaments in seals and security, but also to convey the idea of deconstructed eyes.
No círculo exterior do logo, vemos um padrão Guilloché, não apenas para se referir aos antigos ornamentos em selos e segurança, mas também para transmitir a ideia de olhos descontruídos.
In the same way, alluding to the micro-printing we find on currencies around the world, the stripes inside the circle are, actually, the name of the Ministry of Truth in Newspeak, MINITRUE, written on the bitmap typeface Ernest.
Da mesma forma, aludindo à microimpressão que encontramos em dinheiro ao redor do mundo, as linhas dentro do círculo são, na verdade, o nome do Ministério da Verdade em Novilíngua, MINITRUE (em inglês), escrito com a face tipográfica bitmap Ernest.
Furthermore, the slogan of the party is written inside a triangle. This symbol not just brings us the idea of earthbound elements, but also the symbology of "Past, Present and Future", which suits for the Party's motto "Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past." The 3 stars complement it with the idea of victory over the 3 periods.
Além disso, o slogan do partido está escrito dentro de um triângulo. Este símbolo não apenas nos traz a ideia de elementos ligados à terra, mas também a simbologia de "Passado, Presente e Futuro", que se adequa ao lema do Partido "Aquele que controla o passado controla o futuro; aquele que controla o presente controla o passado." As 3 estrelas complementam isso com a ideia de vitória sobre os 3 períodos.
The typeface chosen for the name of the Ministry and the Party’s slogan is Agency FB, which is, in its own manner, modern and futuristic, yet war-looking.
A face tipográfica escolhida para o nome do Mistério e para o slogan do Partido é Agency FB, que é, à sua própria maneira, moderna e futurista, mas ainda assim com aparência de guerra.
The last element to feature in the logo is a globe, which represents the Party’s aim to dominate the whole world.
O último elemento a aparecer no logo é um globo, que representa o objetivo do Partido de dominar o mundo todo.
