LINEAGE RUINED BY REDLINING is a practice project consisting of a BROCHURE and an EXHIBIT. My goal is to address why and how racial segregation is still present today. I wanted to know what other laws are the reason for disproportional wealth amongst Americans because the Atlantic Slave Trade is not the only answer. Through research, I was able to learn that today, we are living in the aftershock of redlining. My brochure is intended to inform, and my exhibit is intended to evoke emotion. With these two factors, I am visually communicating the need to understand the system we live in as well as encouraging the audience to be the change they want to see.

The red, yellow, blue, and green used are the colors used on the housing segregation maps. On the map, green symbolizes best, blue is still desirable, yellow is declining, and red is hazardous. I also used black and white to emphasize the segregation. In my z fold brochure, black and white interact with each other in the type and background as well as the photos, which is a juxtaposition of segregation. However, the black and white backgrounds are on either side, which also emphasizes redlining.

I chose a house structure to emphasize that the U.S. is built on racism. Also, housing is the basis of redlining. The racist, unwelcoming imagery on the out- side is in juxtaposition to the welcoming symbolism by the open “door.” As black people and all other people of color enter the space, it creates a protest against segregation. The back wall is a grafitti wall, a wall the viewers can interact with as another form of protest. The “door” can also be closed, which will create a tight, uncomfortable environment while the viewer is surrounded by the timeline and imagery of black protestors. This exhibit is to be mostly emotional as well as informational.
