To add to the collection of tools in my workshop I started to design a CNC router using spare parts and second-hand parts that would be built once the design was complete. The design uses 2020 aluminium extrusion for the frame and 12mm mild steel/ aluminium for the gantry. MGN12 linear rails are used for the x and z-axis reducing the moment on the spindle as they are very low profile. SBR20 rails are used for the y axis as these can support the load of the gantry. The overall dimensions are 700x440x500mm (lxwxh) and it has a working area of approximately 270x400x100mm. The motor used for cutting is an 800w handheld router that has been mounted to a 100x100mm piece of 20100 extrusion. This allows for different tools to be mounted such as a laser engraving module or 3d printing hotend. Nema 23 motors, as well as T8 leadscrews, are used for moving each gantry with a gear ratio of 5:1 for added torque. 18mm MDF is used for the spoil board that has had multiple holes drilled through which allows for clamping of parts to the bed.
