An Incredible Move

In 1930, Architect Kurt Vonnegut senior decided to relocate an entire building from its place making a great history.

This building served as the headquarters of Indiana Bell, U.S. In 1929 the authority decided to go for an expansion which required more space. To solve this problem the assigned architect planned structural relocation. The entire building was uplifted using steam-powered hydraulic lifts. Then it was set on enormous pine logs, the building was moved using hand operated jacks. This process could push the building 3/8" at a time. The openings were cut into the foundation and large I-beams were installed to consume the weight of the building.
The most interesting fact of this event is that people could still enter or exit the building using a special curved sidewalk attached to the entry. The project took 4 weeks to complete and within this period of time around 600 employees had worked in full swing without any interruption. Even the gas, electricity, water connection were not hampered at all.
