Experiments in massive particle systems for a lantern festival scene, incorporating volumetrics, subsurface scattering, hundreds of point and emission lights along with accurate reflections on the ocean.
This underwent many different variations, playing around with the level of smoke in the air, to the thousands of individual lanterns spawned into the scene.
The individual lanterns were modeled and lit separately, before being used as the genesis of the particle systems. In total, there were five separate ocean planes receding into the distance, each an emitter for their own system.
