A DESIGN CRITIQUE AND LABEL DESIGN
Product used: Palmolive raspberry foaming hand soap refill (500 ml)
TASK ONE - DESIGN CRITIQUE
All of the 3 sans serif typefaces work cohesively, making it difficult to pull apart the different typefaces. The majority of the text is aligned in the middle of the composition, framed by boxes and shapes. The larger text that is used is more spaced out compared to the information text on the back, which is smaller and condensed.
The primary typeface is used with different treatments (Bold) and sizes. The brand possibly uses their own typeface that isn't represented elsewhere on the bottle and is the most prominent text. However, the primary typeface is also used in both capitals and lower case. Still, the lower case is only used for smaller text such as directions. The third and final typeface is small but heavier than the primary, making it easy to locate it (ingredients).

Across the whole label, there is only one strong use of imagery, besides the small symbols on the back, representing the smell of the product (raspberries). The only other element on the label other than text is the filled or outlined rectangles that the reader serves to separate from the rest.
I think the packaging is well laid out, and the colours used represent some of the products main goals. For example, a lot of the colour green is accompanied by text like "54% less plastic." The central alignment consistent throughout the design is aesthetically pleasing as it is easy to follow with the eyes.

The central alignment creates an equal amount of text and empty space, and a sense of balance. The only imagery that is not major creates contrast and draws the eyes due to the difference in position within the label. I believe this sense of balance is essential to the brand as the balance creates a furthermore sense of cleanliness.
TASK 2 - LABEL DESIGN
As can be seen below, the labels dimensions are 12.5 cm by 6.5 cm, and is a round arch shape. the labels are not connected buy are two of the same shape. The refined sketches of the general layout for the label are as shown
The final interations are composed of the following
1. With two typefaces and one colour
2. With one typeface and two colours
3. With one typeface and one colour
1. With two typefaces and one colour
The sizing of specific information was inspired off the original label, as their marketing team and the brand have thought about what elements of text they want the most visible. Like the original, this design used shapes to add further emphasis to the information that needed to stand out. I also used lines to separate some text whilst also creating an aesthetic and easy to read label. The alignment is also mainly like the original as most of if is aligned in the centre, except for areas where there are two columns.
2. With one Typeface and two colours
Adding colour to the composition did add both a functional and aesthetic element to the design. However, because the scaling and sizing was done for the design before, nothing had to change. This did made the design more appealing however and most likely easier on the eyes with the slight pop of colour to take away from the all grey look of the design before.
3. With one typeface and one colour
This final iteration challenged the design the most, as the treatment of the one font used was changed to add some more variation and contrast since using only the one font made some areas less prominent as I wanted them to be. However I do believe that the different shapes and lines played the most significant part in the composition. It is because of them that the various text elements stand out.
