Collectors and their collections

In this project I was to look at the relationship between a collector and their collections. This is personal to me because I chose to focus on my father’s lifetime collection of 12-inch vinyl, something that continues to this day, nearly 60 years in the making.

The brief behind this was to design a medium in which to display the collection and write an exposition on the way the collector interacts with these items. As the focus of this project is on records, I decided to design this in the format of an album cover and booklet that generally accompanies these records. For its content I took original photos of the complete collection, highlighting those of importance and the stories behind them and wrote an essay discussing the collection.

As a corollary to this I was to design a public exhibition of this collection in the glass tank outside The Design Museum’s old residence on London’s Embankment (shown in the last image). This was the first time I had thought about design in three-dimensional space, something I found challenging, but enjoyable and rewarding at the same time.
