Jamini Roy - Stop Motion

This project - “Stay home, Stay Positive” - was a global open call primarily distributed through an Instagram account named after the project.
Each post depicted a balcony based on a template provided.
On this balcony, the artists were asked to represent their way of celebrating, following the trend of clapping for the medical staff.
This celebration was dedicated to the heroes who fought against the COVID-19 virus.

This project was carried out for over one month in April 2020 during the COVID-19 lock-down. 516 artists (172 floors on Instagram) from all over the world created their own balconies to bring positive energy to the world.

The overall aim was to create the tallest, loudest and most positive building in the digital world. :)

Here is my creation for this project, inspired by the master artist Jamini Roy from India.
Hand-made piece with stop-motion animation.

The inspiration came about after reading this article on The Heritage Lab which highlights the nuances of Jamini Roy's style of painting.
About Jamini Roy
Jamini Roy had studied Western style of painting at the Govt. College of Arts in Calcutta.
Not satisfied with the outcome, he ventured out to find his own voice by developing a style that drew inspiration mainly from traditional Indian folk and village arts, especially of Bengal.

Roy fused modernism with the rural arts, thus increasing their appeal among urban
masses. His harmonized visual identification, focus on subject and repetitive use of motifs,
enabled him to become an artist who created a new visual language within Indian art.
For his immense contributions to the Modern Indian Art, he was rightfully recognized as a 'National Treasure' in 1976 by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Below is the template provided to us which we were supposed to follow to create our balconies.
This was to ensure uniformity among the submissions as they were going to be published on Instagram so as to look like a tall building.
I started off by selecting the elements which could form the part of a balcony.
The bird and the plants were the obvious choices.
Since the project also required the inclusion of a character,
my initial thought was to include a pair of mother and child.

However, due to space constraints (template size above) I decided to feature only the woman with her intricate details and almond eyes, a feature of Jamini Roy's paintings.
All the individual pieces, each crafted by hand to achieve the painterly effect.
That's it! Now, the remainder of the task was to move these elements frame-by-frame to create the animation. I used a make-shift setup along with a simple mobile phone and Stop Motion Studio app to capture the images. Final compilation of the video was done in Blender.
More details about the entire project and the creators involved can be found here.
Finally, a movie was created highlighting the best creations that came out of this project.
