Exercise 2: Illustrated Letterform
The letterform I chose was the letter ‘P’ in Helvetica Bold. After sketching and exploring various ideas, I decided to create a pony. The pony is facing forward with her head slightly tilted upward. Her tail is swooshing to the side to form the curve of the capital ‘P’. To give the head tilt and the swooshing tail purpose, I decided to add in the cute detailing of two flies. The flies and their track lines make up the rest of the ‘P’. After creating the base layer of the design, I added in the texture of the tail and mane. After some trial and error, I found the best way to create this texture was to add multiple layers. I imagine that the light source is coming from the upper right corner. I’m not sure I was completely successful in creating shadows across the pony’s body, but I like the way the legs turned out. I found it difficult to structure the main part of the pony’s body. It’s a large shape and I had some trouble making it look like had the same attention and detailing as the head and the tail.

Exercise Overview: Create a conceptual illustration utilizing a chosen letterform as the base. The illustration topic should represent the letterform while demonstrating a strong understanding of aesthetics and compositional principles.
