GW Athletics Shares Historic Moments for GW Centennial

An accomplished business professional, Thaddeus (Tad) Lindner laid the foundation for his career by attaining a bachelor's degree in foreign affairs from George Washington University (GW). A student athlete, Thaddeus Lindner was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame.

As GW celebrates its centennial in 2021, GW Athletics is sharing some of its proudest stories throughout its history, including the prominent athletes on its former football team. The team played its last game in 1996, but by then, several of its players had gone on to prominent roles in the NFL. For instance, running back Alphonse “Tuffy” Leemans is recognized as one of the best players to ever hit the university's gridiron, and he earned a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his play with the New York Giants. At GW, he set records in carries, career rushing yards, and single-season rushing yards.

Beyond the accomplishments of individual players, GW Athletics highlighted that its football team once shared the same field with the NFL's Washington Football Team. Additionally, head coach Eugene “Bo” Sherman achieved the title of Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 1956, when he led the team to a perfect season and won the Sun Bowl on New Year’s Day 1957.
