Photorealism in Illustrator: Crafting a Watch

Photorealism in Illustrator: Crafting a watch
The client for this project wanted a photo realistic vector design of a watch. I chose to base my watch off of the simple black and red CRRJU watch. I wanted to create a watch that captured the feel and essence that this simple watch does.
When beginning my sketches, I looked at several different watches to get a feel of what makes up a watch. I then began sketching different parts of watches to see what pieces would work well together and what pieces would not. I also focused on how light hitting these objects would change their look and their appearance.
After my first initial rough draft, which looked more like an icon set, I was able to receive feedback of what elements to focus on. I received the feedback that I needed to add highlights and shadow to almost every element of my design. I had the initial shapes for the design, but I did not have the details that would make this design look photo realistic. So I went to work and added shadows to the brim of the watch, highlights in the hands and the button, and then I worked on adding shadows to the points of the watch where light would hit it. All of these elements helped to make my design look photo real.
I think my final design accomplishes my goal. While my design is not an exact match of the watch that it was based off of, it is able to capture the feel of the watch and highlights the key elements that are most crucial in the design while also making it look photoreal.
