“Fortune”
Koi Fish (Underwater)
Air-Dry Clay, Modeling

Artist Statement

The artist here wanted to portray a koi fish in a flowing motion. She named the artwork after the koi fish’s Chinese interpretation, fortune. It could mean different things depending on the person. Fortune, as in wealth, affluence and possessions. Alternately, fortune could also mean luck, fate and certainty.

Although this is essentially her first-time sculpting, she made the fins too thin, which in turn made the sculpture fragile. She was having a hard time in particular with the shape of the body. Since one side comes out flat, however the head begin in an oblong sort of figure for the mouth and the eyes. The colors represent the two meanings or fortune, orange being riches and white being destiny.
