Afrikan Alphabets

Afrikan Alphabets is a book written by Afrikan author, graphic designer, design educator and typographer Saki Mafundikwa.

The book brings light to the origins of typography within Afrika. Setting fire to the definition and understanding of what typography truly is. While crediting the quality, intelligence and skill possessed by those who used these ancient Afrikan typefaces and dialects.

The essence of this book is the balance and wholesomeness of art, design, nature and spirituality.

Vision for the redesign of the book

The theme for the redesigning of this books cover is All in one. This theme refers to the purpose and essence of this book, which brings balance and unity to art, design, nature and spirituality. The author when writing the book had the intention of bringing design into an Afrikan perspective, ranging form the colours, the text (font), illustrations and compositions. All these are aspects I will use to guide the vision of the redesign.

One of the symbols, used by the Akan people of Ghana and Cote d’lvoire, called Adinkra Symbols there is one which embodies the book and its metaphor for redesigning. This symbol is also the authors favourite symbol in this writing system, its called Sankofa. Which means “Return and get it” to learn from the past.
The Fonts used for the redesign are Agus Sans and Coves
This is the colour pallet choice.
