PROBLEM STATEMENT
Smart home device users need a way to manage and control multiple smart home devices conveniently with their mobile phones.
OBJECTIVE
As the smart home industry is growing, my intention was to design an app where users can add their devices and manage everything from the TV volume to the home temperature, lights, door communications, in a couple of taps on the screen.
SOLUTION PROCESS:
- Sketches
- Wireframe
- User Flow
- Storyboards
- UI Design
HERE WE GO!
Sketches
Example:
I usually start the design process with sketches. This is the way I iterate through many design options quickly.
The main purpose was brainstorming, I wanted to get out as many ideas as I could.
Before sketching, I had researched smarthome apps.
I made maybe 10-15 different versions.
I choose the version I thought was closest to my goal and more interesting & intuitive.
My sketches helped me move forward.
Wireframes
Example
On my design process I also created low fidelity wireframes for testing purposes. I used the "Ideate" app on my iPad.
Benefits:
- Defined the idea.
- Positioned my elements where I saw fits.
- Test, test, test.
User Flow
This User Flow demonstrates the on-boarding of a new or additional product.
Storyboards
Making scenarios help me get a clear idea of when and where my app can be used.
UI Design
Example:
Once I tested out all usability mistakes, I started designing the final screens in Sketch.
What I did:
- I wanted to use more of a dark theme, for the purpose of looking unique from other apps.
- I believe dark theme with beautiful nuances reflect seriosity.
- I searched on Behance to find some inspiration.
- I usually follow the iOS guideline.
- I did all of my screens on Sketch.
- I made the intro screens with a lighter nuance, so the user feels some kind of warmth at the beginning.
