sound branding: a study in methodology

Sound Branding: a Study in Methodology is an experimental project seeking to understand the dynamic of creation between sound and visual communication.

The project consists of the construction of a methodology in which one could explore the relation between sound and image, by creating graphic work out of sonic data. From an experimental point of view, we can encounter two main study points: sound as an experience and sonic-visual branding as a basis for branding.

This way, we have presented through a manual, a sonic-visual branding methodology, to construct a brand's image from the sonic point of view. Moreover, through the construction of a soundtrack for a fictitious film festival, we can develop its visual translation, using both studied and new dynamics, to achieve an audiovisual product that can combine sound and image. In this project, the film festival acts as a client for the methodology created, with its sonic and visual elements representing the performance of the stages of an experimental and synesthetic project.

In this scenario in which sound is a primary connection factor between the client and a brand, the idea of Sound Branding stands tall as a category responsible for creating a sonic language that can be incorporated in many aspects of a brand's design process. In all of them, there is a desire to understand the different forms of sonic work that can help with the objective of attracting new clients in an era of clear sensory pollution.

Sound branding itself is an offspring of traditional Visual Branding which uses instruments, timbers, musical styles, sonic textures, and more as a way to better define a client's brand personality and make it more recognizable.

This project was created for the Projeto V module for the Design BA at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.
