Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) 2020

For the last 38 years, VIFF has been a champion of arts and culture as a means to engage with communities, stir up conversations, and connect people through the arts. Despite global and local challenges, the 2020 Vancouver International Film Festival remained committed to these goals and introduced their very first online streaming edition of the festival, allowing audiences to experience the art of cinema from the comfort – and safety – of their own homes.

This year’s campaign design presented us with a number of interesting challenges and opportunities. With the change in format and online nature of the 2020 festival, we saw an opportunity to embrace a festival concept that felt inherently digital, playful, and high energy, all while capturing the spirit of VIFF. Utilizing visual nods to the web and the feeling of being online alongside abstracted and surreal illustrations that capture the range of feelings across genres of film, we have created a campaign that showcases the VIFF brand in a new way – suiting for a very unique year.

This highly collaborative project saw us working alongside internal leadership, staff, and external production houses to ensure that every touchpoint felt cohesive and interwoven to one core campaign direction.
