The end of everything is the beginning of something, in a world where climate is fast changing and devastation is reigning, are we approaching an apocalyptic future? As we start to dive more into an efficient and sustainable design proves that we began to experience. Armageddon is here and we are adapting to it.
Most architects would recognize that no man-made structure will survive the wrath of Mother Nature for ever. After all, those very bunkers built in the 50s to withstand nuclear attack are decaying. The purpose of this design is an ideology of how will the apocalyptic world will impact architecture through the years. Mainly its materiality and process of construction. Furthermore, its prevailing green architecture that will impact more on planning and its façade. Lastly, its users, if architecture can adapt will people follow through?

The designer’s interpretation of the post-apocalyptic architecture are fortress-like structure that shows structural integrity through its thick walls and bunker type of fortification. Using limited windows and openings will protect its users from any threats. Energy efficient building envelope will help in an environment of scarce resources; Rain Catchment Systems is the key where potable water and sanitary sewer services should remain operational, so a basic grey water system is really a non-negotiable item to any project; and many more.
Designers should offers a solution that works within the parameters of the environment, learning from it and responding to it passively. In a world of overwhelming complexity, apocalyptic architecture is really no different from Utopian designs.
