How are art and design related?

They are related because they both use the idea of expressing something through visuals. When we create art we try to convey an idea through our imagination. As for design we also do the same thing except we create them digitally. In addition, when people create art, the process of creating art is similar to design. The first step is to plan or think of a concept that you plan on using throughout the process. When they have that down, you might search for some references or inspiration to get you started. The only difference is the medium that is used during the process of making art and design.
