Brush Lettering Project

Hand Renderings
The Vector Process
Final Vectored Artwork
Reflection:

The goal of this project was to create our own hand rendered alphabet using Tombow brush pens. We began by learning and practicing the technique of the bush pens, and then we experimented with different styles. We drew our alphabets out on tracing paper, vectorized them, and then added backgrounds to them.

I began by using tracing paper on top of the practice sheets to get more familiar with the brush pens. I started by tracing lines and curves which helped me figure out how much pressure I needed to apply to get a thick line versus the amount of pressure I needed for a thin line. Then I  moved on to tracing the letters. I also used the thinner tip of the pen to get cleaner thin lines in my letters. After getting more practice with the technique I began drawing my own letters without the guide. I took my finished hand rendered alphabet and vectorized it using Photoshop and Illustrator. I was able to change the color of my letters and add a background.

I learned several things throughout this project. During the first half of the project I was able to learn more about using brush pens. I do have experience with hand lettering, but I typically do not use brush pens, so I was able to push myself to become better at using them and learn the technique. During the second half of the project I was able to strengthen my Photoshop and Illustrator skills. Using the programs more often helps me become more familiar with them.
