Say It With Science Brand Identity

Client:
The United Nations Foundation (UNF) in collaboration with The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Project Summary:
The UNF under the IPCC created an initiative intended to appeal to youths 11-25 years old interested in STEM, specifically as it relates to climate change science.

The UNF commissioned Istrico Productions to develop a brand strategy and a visual language for this initiative called Say It With Science. The scope of the project includes logo creation, brand guidelines, templates (print, web, social media), and a branded web presence.

Challenge:
To engage a demographic as broad as 11-25 year olds with climate change content that competes with all the other media that demands their attention is probably the greatest challenge for any marketer today.

The question was ultimately, how do we visually speak to this demographic in an engaging way while still conveying crucial information on how the climate is rapidly changing, how it effects humanity, and to ways it can be counteracted? Taking this a step further, how do we get that demographic to respond with their own content to deepen the conversation?

Approach:
The goal was to "wake up" the traditionally corporate feel of science-related marketing. Say It With Science is not speaking to the climate community who already buy in to the messaging; it's directed towards younger people that aren't necessarily invested in the content or even aware of the information yet. Say It With Science is the beginning of a conversation between the climate science community and our future – the youth of today.

The most obvious icon representing the act of speaking is the word bubble, which is what the brand revolves around. The imagery, colors, textures and typography convey a bold, forward-moving, attention-grabbing aesthetic. The brand palette is bright, the fonts are bold, the imagery is vibrant, and textures and angles represent energy in motion.

Digital Applications:
The Say It With Science brand was developed during the early months of the pandemic quarantine when virtual conferences, meetings, and presentations became a way of life. Developing social media, presentation deck, and email templates was critical for the client to reach their audience in every virtual way possible.

It was important that promotional graphics for all media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, email, presentation slides) follow the guidelines consistently while providing a variety of looks to keep the content fresh. The system also allows for flexibility to adapt content regardless of whether it is text or a mix of text and imagery.  Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint and InDesign templates were built to accomodate that content and also to be accessible to any level of designated user to edit.

Web site:
The Say It With Science site was built for the purpose of not only conveying pertinent climate science information but also acting as a repository for community-sourced content.

Outcome:
Feels pretty good when something you designed receives nearly a million likes on social. Definitely helps when the work is promoted by a world famous artist.
