Part I - Look #1
My senior collection at Marist College has to be my favorite all-time project I have ever completed.
Intro
I called it "Art Deco Barbie", a modern mash-up of Barbie meets the 1920's era in fashion. Sparkles, glam, this collection has it all. Head to toe sequins, rhinestones, tulle and more - there is something for everyone. Let's start with the full complete collection illustrated in gouache and mixed media. Look #1 which I refer to as... "The Owl"
Development in creating a collection is key - whether you are dyeing fabric or embroidering, every step of the way is an important part. Some techniques that you will find throughout Art Deco Barbie is hand-embroidery (sequins), digital textile printing, and block-printing. Here are some of my first samples that I began with below.
Some people asked me why I chose to hand-sequin each individual sequin to my garments and the answer is...dedication and a pure love for sparkle! I found it so much fun to just keep stitching away until I created something new. Below is a closeup of some of my handwork on the embroidered owl jersey shirt that you will soon see shortly.
One of my most time consuming pieces from the collection is this jersey owl shirt trimmed with stretch lace that I refer to as "The Owl". This model rocked this look by the way, her attitude kills and those harem pants - um yes. Thoughts go back to the long hours I spent snipping out sequins from the inner seams of those pants. Now that's what I call dedication!
