Silent Gestures with Ilya Kaminsky
Kaminsky lost most of his hearing at the age of four after a doctor mis- diagnosed him with a cold instead of mumps. ‘My secret: at the age of four, I became deaf. When I lost my hearing,’ he later wrote in a poem, ‘I began to see voices. On a crowded trolley, a one-armed man said my life would be mysteriously linked to the history of my country.’
