A redesign of a traditional community center located in Salmiya, gulf street. We won second place in this project. We were inspired from Kuwait traditional buildings and techniques of natural cooling. In old traditional buildings people used to sprinkle water all around their house in summer to passively cool the wind. We translated that into our design and focused on how to make the open spaces bearable in summer seasons. After a site analysis of studying the sun and wind movements, we surrounded the buildings around the open space in the middle to block the noise coming from the main street and to create some shade. The buildings are lifted off the ground creating a space under where water was placed in it to cause evaporative cooling and passively cool the wind. Wind goes through the trees to clear impurities and then travel above the water to cool it. We also took traditional design elements, colors and materials into our design.
