The Cage
The cage is a wearable technology design that symbolises sexual inequality and discrimination of Muslim women. These range from cultural mores and psychological attitudes that condone bigotry or violence towards women, to laws that refuse to recognize them as legal and moral agents on a par with men, to the restriction or denial of political-economic rights and resources to them relative to men. The cage visualises a religious veil – hijab, worn by Muslim women in the presence of any male outside of their immediate family, which usually covers the hair, head and chest. Women are still required by law in some countries to wear hijab in public.
