Accordion Books

ACCORDION BOOKS

Accordion Books are made from a sequence of folds along a strip of paper, creating pages of a continuous narrative. They can also be folded up and closed when not in use. Because if this, accordion books often have a “jacket” which acts like a book cover or a protective sleeve which covers the pages when it is not displayed out. All though they have a simple structure, they can have many things added to them to make it more advanced. Such as, pop-outs, pockets, added pages and cut outs.

I began to list the materials I may want to use on my accordion book:
- Illustrations
- Labels and receipts
- Image collage
- Mixed media (paint, markers, etc)
As we had to produce a journey that meant something to us, I decided to develop on my idea from my Envelope Book (things I like). So, I deceived to show myself growing up, but shown through the interests I had at the time.

I wanted to include more of my own illustrations in this piece than found images, so my first step to creating this book was to list interests I’ve had in my life and produce some rough sketches for them.

I then began choosing my favourites and placing them in order. I worked out I could have 7 pages if I added one onto the accordion. Before I started making the book. I deceived to look for some inspiration. I decided to look at Sara Fanelli’s “The Onions Great Escape”. Fanelli uses a mixture of collage, traditional and digital media in her books.I chose this one in particular as the whole middle section of the book is a pop-out, of the protagonist, “Onion”.
In my book I ended up using a jacket, a pop out and a cut out page. I think that these all worked successfully and complimented the illustrations. I also made the first two pages slightly smaller to help imply that I, was too smaller at the time. I also used collage for some of the backgrounds. Which I think worked well as it gave texture to the pages, and was a nice contrast from the flat colour of the parkers and paint.
