Illustration - Papertoy

For Illustration I had to make a paper toy.
My plan was to make a dark fantasy/steampunk bird dressed as a wizard working in a shop where they sell a lot of dark potion's and herbs.

It started of with a few basic sketches of a square and it eventually evolved into a lot of different idea's for a paper toy. The biggest sketch on the picture in the left corner was the one I chose to make because, I really like the wizard hat combined with the beak and the pointy ears with a bit of a steampunk style. You can see a bit of the steampunk style because of the goggles and the bag.

After a long struggle I chose the purple colour because it seemed more cold an fitting with the dark fantasy style. In the brown and red clothing the brown of the bag and goggles seemed to fade away in the whole picture.

I had to think a lot with the logo but in the end I choose the round sketch in the right corner of the left picture. In this logo all the element's seemed to better come together as a whole, in the other one's it looks like a lot of loose elements squashed together. The chosen logo can easily be used as a brand sticker for on a potion bottle's or hanged out as a sign above the shop.
Before making a prototype in paper I made the paper toy in blender and unwrapped the whole thing so, that I would have a good unfold and overview.
After that I started to make a prototype in paper to make a few adoption's so that everything would fit and work the way I wanted to.
In order to print, fold and cut the paper toy at the print shop I had to make a Zund and a unfold of the coloured print
This is the end result. I'm really happy how it turned out!
for those who want to read it, there's is a bit more of information about the papertoy and the shop below.
Feedback Illustration teacher:

You work on the project with passion and good energy. You really looked for how to make Paper Toy better and better. You communicate well and ask for help when needed. Your process is clear and straightforward. Your Paper Toy has a playful and narrative look. It's nice that you also wrote a real story.

Evelution:

I really liked this assignment and I also had a lot of fun making it. Probably because we could also make the papertoy in real life and that is one of the things that really got me excited.
One of the struggels I was facing was, to make a fold out of the papertoy. I started by just using paper prototypes but, then I switched to blender. But when I made the fold out the measurements were incorrect and it took me a lot of time to make them correct again but, in the end it worked. Next time I'm just going to stay with making paper prototypes because, I have the measurements correctly and I know for sure it works.
The Night Owl

Down town in The Great Alchemist Street on house number 13 there is a small potion shop called The Night Owl. In the dark magic shop there Live's an unusual black creature. it's so unusual that it's species doesn't have a name or maybe this creature is the only one of it's kind. the creature has big wing's like a dragon, pointy ears and a big bird beak. It's eye's are always shining bright white like the full moon on a dark night.

In the daylight the bird like creature is standing in it's shop selling dark potion's and herbs to the creature's, people or other beings creeping in the dark. On most dark night's you'll find the unusual creature in the nature looking for ingredients and herbs.
On some night's it's or in the shop lab making and experimenting with potion's and other kinds of dark magic yet to be discovered.
