Hungry Ghost Festival

HUNGRY GHOST FESTIVAL ( 中元节 )
MALAYSIA
The 15th day of the 7th month in the lunar calendar is Ghost Day, where all ghosts and spirits, including those of deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm. On that day the realms of Heaven and Hell and the realm of the living are open! Both Taoists and Buddhists would perform rituals to transmute and absolve the sufferings of the deceased.
It sounds like a horror movie, but the Hungry Ghost Festival is interesting and fun to watch. During the festival, people flock to watch the "Ghost" (which is made from giant paper sculptures) and stage performances in traditional Chinese costumes. As said by a Chinese proverb, "The ghost festival is a time when the living offers food and drink to their ancestors, to ease the passage of their spirits and to ensure good fortune in the coming year." Enjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing travel visual clips, where I share a glimpse of my travel visuals and thoughts. Each series features a paragraph about the history of the place, followed by a paragraph describing my thoughts while exploring that place. Accompanied by no more than fifteen carefully curated images that I took, each series is intended to give you the umami of travel. - Julius Yls
